Exhibit booth of Malvarosa Orchids with Cattleya orchids

The 67th Philippine Orchid Society’s Midyear Show
By Norby Bautista

After weeks of raining, the blooming of the majestic Waling-Waling orchid or the Vanda sanderiana signals the celebration of the Philippine Orchid Society’s 67th Midyear Orchid and Garden Show, which opened last August 29, 2013 at the Hardin ng mga Bulaklak, Quezon Memorial Circle, Elliptical Road, Diliman Quezon City.

With the theme: “Philippine Orchid Species Revisited”, the society aims to continue its tradition of promoting the growing of orchids and at the same time all sorts of garden plants here in the Philippines, for livelihood and recreational purposes.  With this, the Philippine Orchid Society aims to give its share of helping reduce the effect of climate change and global warming through gardening, as plants are carbon sinks, meaning plants can absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide and incorporate them into their tissues through photosynthesis.

With this activity, the society once again transformed a portion of the Quezon Memorial Circle into a  interesting tropical paradise, shaded with trees, lined with cool loving ferns, landscaped with colorful flowering plants, and adorned with delightful uniquely scented orchid blooms.  The POS has been continuing its role of promoting and encouraging orchid growing and gardening as a enjoyable hobby, and as a profitable livelihood for Filipinos.  It is about time for our country to really develop our plants for the beautification of the city.

The garden show had a soft opening last Thursday,  August 29, headed by Ms. Evangeline Go, the current President of the Philippine Orchid Society, Mr. Kelvin Neil B. Manubay, Vice-President, and Ms. Anna Ruth Purificacion-Conde, the Overall-Chairman of this season’s midyear show. Guest of honors were Senator Cynthia Villar and Wife of our Vice President Mrs. Elenita Binay, came during the cutting of the ribbon ceremony. The event were also attended by members of the Philippine Orchid Society, and also the officers and members of the various garden clubs like the Philippine Horticultural Society, The Bonsai Society, The Los Banos Horticultural Society, Ferns and Nature Society, The Flower Circle, The Philippine Cactus and Succulents Society and the various member plant growers like Mr. Serapion Metilla, Mrs. Adoracion S. Bernabe, VS Orchids, Malvarosa Orchids, Purificacion Orchids, Puentespina Orchids, and many more.

The show is composed of various landscaped exhibit booths promoting the blooming of our very own Waling-Waling orchids or the Vanda sanderiana, plus booths on bonsai, cactus, ferns, aroids, and other plant types.  There is even the first table judging of floral arrangements done by our local amateur and professional cut-flower arrangers.

Beside the exhibit booth area are the commercial booths which are selling blooming orchid plants, cacti and succulents, potted foliage plants, bonsai materials, ferns, fruit tree seedlings, annual plants, fertilizers, garden ornaments, and other garden supplies and accessories.
There is also a series of daily free lectures composed of the following topics starting at 3:00pm:  Friday Aug 30 -- Effective Micro-organism Technology for horticulture & drip irrigation & fertigation system by Mr. Toto Barcelona of Harbest Agribusiness Corp.; Saturday,  Aug 31 -- Living a Healthy & Sustainable Life with Plants by Mr. Serapion Metilla; Sunday, Sept. 01 -- Sleeping beauties of the Orchid World by Ms. Vangie Go; Monday, Sept. 02 -- Orchid Pest & Disease Control Measures by Mr. Norberto Bautista; Tuesday, Sept 03 -- ‘Zero’ Maintenance Aquarium Plant Keeping by Mr. Ronald Achacoso; Wednesday, Sept 04 -- Landscaping your home & garden by Mr. Jimmy Floro; Thursday, Sept. 05 -- Flower Arrangement for all occasion by Mr. Alfonso ‘Ponchit’ Ponce-Enrile; Friday, Sept. 06 -- Plant Nutrition & Urban Gardening by Allied Botanical Corporation; Saturday, Sept 07 -- Introduction to Pinoy bonsai, tray landscape by Mr. Vic de Rona; Sunday Sept 08 -- Cattleya Orchid Growing by Atty.
